ABOUT Level I Beginner Adult Tap
Level 1: Beginner Adult Tap is ideal for the absolute beginner, tap veteran, or anyone looking to begin or continue their training and journey into the art of tap dancing in a fun and relaxed environment! The class emphasizes core tap fundamentals, proper technique, and tap vocabulary.
In a moderately paced class, students will learn to rhythmically shift weight and dance in time, proper placement and weight distribution in their tap shoes, how to accurately articulate all parts of the foot, and of course the ABCs of tap vocabulary, i.e. “the steps.” Much time will be spent on weight shift (i.e. step, hop, leap, ball change, and skip), rudiments (articulating the separation between the front and back tap (i.e. toe and heel) in various rhythm patterns, and basic gestures that combine with weight shifts (i.e. shuffle, slap and flap). Once we establish “The Basics,” we learn to build on them through basic time steps, progressions, exercises and combinations. We will learn historical tap choruses, such as “The Shim Sham Shimmy” as well as original combinations created by the instructor.
Dancers will also develop an appreciation and understanding of basic music theory, as they will experience first hand the deep and imperative connection between tap dancing, ear training and feeling and performing music.
REQUIREMENTS
No prior experience is required. If you have never taken a tap dance class, or have had fewer than six months of classes, this is the class for you. This is a high-energy class and an engaging workout for the mind and body! Please wear tap shoes and comfortable clothing for moving with ankle visibility.
